A Morning Devotional: Starting the Day Before the Day Starts You
Whatever gets the first ten minutes of your morning sets the tone for the rest of it. Usually that is a screen. It does not have to be.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.
Psalm 143:8
Reflect
David wrote this while hiding from people who wanted him dead. It is not a sunny, well-rested prayer. It is what a person says when the day ahead is genuinely frightening and they need to hear something true before they hear anything else.
Notice what he asks for first. Not a solution. Not an escape. Word of unfailing love. He wants to be reminded who God is before he faces what the day is. Direction comes second — and only after the reminder.
Most of us reverse that order. We wake up and immediately ask what needs solving. We check the phone and let a feed decide our mood before our feet hit the floor. Then we spend the rest of the day trying to feel steady, when steadiness was available at 6:15 for the cost of four quiet minutes.
Practice
- Before you unlock your phone, read Psalm 143:8 out loud. Out loud matters — it slows you down.
- Name one thing about today you cannot control. Say it plainly.
- Pray one sentence: "Show me the way I should go today, especially with ____."
- Pick one word from the verse — unfailing, morning, trust, way — and carry it as your anchor for the day.
Pray
Father, before the noise starts, remind me that your love does not fail and did not sleep. I do not know how today will go. Show me the way I should go, and steady me in the parts I cannot control. I am entrusting this day to you — not just the hard part of it, all of it. Amen.
Go deeper today
- Read all of Psalm 143 — the honesty of verses 3 and 4 earns the hope of verse 8.
- Compare with Lamentations 3:22-23: mercies new every morning.
- Journal one line: what would change today if I actually believed God's love toward me did not fail?
