12 Bible Verses for Anxiety — and How to Actually Use Them
A verse list is only useful if you know what to do with it at 2am. Here are twelve, with their context and a plan for the moment you need them.

Verse lists for anxiety are everywhere, and most of them are useless at the moment you actually need them — because a verse without its context reads like a slogan, and slogans do not hold weight at 2am. Here are twelve with enough context to carry something.
When the worry is about provision
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:34
Jesus says this to people with real food insecurity, not to people with comfortable lives. He is not dismissing the concern; he is capping its jurisdiction at twenty-four hours.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7
"Cast" is a throwing word — the same energy as throwing a net. It is active, and it usually has to be repeated. Casting once and picking it back up is normal.
When the fear is about what is coming
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9
Both are spoken to people facing something genuinely dangerous. The comfort offered is never "nothing bad will happen" — it is "you will not be alone in it."
When your mind will not stop
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.
Philippians 4:6-7
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
Isaiah 26:3
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7
When you are exhausted
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest... for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
Psalm 94:19
Note the honesty of that psalm: anxiety was great. Scripture never asks you to pretend the level is lower than it is.
When you feel alone in it
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
How to actually use them
- Pick one verse — not twelve. A list is for choosing from, not for reading through when you are already overwhelmed.
- Say it out loud, slowly, twice. Anxiety lives in a fast internal voice; speaking interrupts it.
- Name the specific worry to God in one plain sentence. Vague prayer leaves vague anxiety.
- Add one thanksgiving, however small. Philippians attaches it to the peace for a reason.
- Do the next small physical thing — water, a walk, sleep. Elijah got food and rest before he got a word from God (1 Kings 19).
Common questions
What is the best Bible verse for anxiety?
Philippians 4:6-7 is the most direct: bring every situation to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and his peace will guard your heart and mind. 1 Peter 5:7 and Matthew 6:34 are close companions to it.
Does the Bible say anxiety is a sin?
The Bible commands us not to be mastered by anxiety, but it never treats the experience of fear as disqualifying. David, Elijah, and Jesus himself express deep distress in scripture. The instruction is about where to take it, not about pretending you do not feel it.
